What defines the volume of the Universe?
Is it space itself, or just space that harbors matter? In other words, if you leave a city and end up in the woods, you are no longer in the city. You know this because there is nothing city-like around you anymore. Likewise with the universe, if you travel so far and so long in one direction, until all Galaxies are behind you, and there is nothing but space(emptyness) in front of you. Are you still in the universe? Does space and mass define what the universe is? Or just space with the potential to hold mass?
No one yet knows the volume of the universe. It is likely beyond what is visible from here (or from anywhere).
From all that I have read, there is no edge to the universe where the galaxies end and empty space begins. Instead, all that I have read points to the odd idea that the universe has no edge and no center (at least from our 3-dimensional point of view).
